JONATHAN - Rawlett Community Sports College , Tamworth
Jonathan is proof that with hard work and determination you can achieve your goals. Jonathon came to Rawlett Community Sports College from Burton on Trent after the start of Year 10. His Father is disabled and the family have a social worker attached to them. Jonathan has always had support with his Literacy and was identified by school as someone who may not progress into Employment, Training or Education. Jonathan started on the ESF ‘Progress to Success' project in January 2006. Initially he completed a Fast Tomato careers guidance session and created a Learning plan to help identify his personal and career goals. From that Jonathan identified that he wanted to work in Landscaping and Horticulture. However he was shy and low on confidence and not sure that he could gain qualifications in these areas.
As the year progressed Jonathan took part in a Team Challenge Day, Interview Training, College taster days and with the help of the school he began a 10 week extended work experience with Lodge Farm Nurseries. This also involved working towards the ASDAN Foundation for Work award. From this experience Jonathan found this was definitely the career path he wanted to take. We helped identify a Horticulture course at Rodbaston College and Jonathan attended an open day with his family. Jonathan was then offered a place on the BTEC First Diploma course at Rodbaston College . This was subject to his GCSE results. Jonathan was determined to succeed and get the grades he needed.
Jane Gentles the school Special Needs Co-ordinator takes up his story:
“At his previous school, Jonathan was not entered for SATS presumably because he was not considered capable of achieving. Initially his grades were low but as he gained confidence his personality blossomed. He made friends and frequented the Special Needs area before registration and at other unstructured times. He attended homework club and extra sessions for catch-up. We gave him a reader and scribe for examinations. Jonathan took part in the Staffordshire Partnership scheme ‘Progress to Success' and this proved really good for him. He got a lot of pleasure from attending the course, his extended work experience and the celebration event at the Staffordshire County Showground. In the GCSE examinations in 2007 he achieved 7 A-G grades, 2 of which were A-C . He gained the schools highest contextual value added in the GCSE examinations in 2007.”
Jonathan had done it and with pride he took up his place at Rodbaston College in September 2007. Here are Jonathans comments:
“All the project activities helped build my confidence; they helped me understand what opportunities were out there for me. I really felt at home on my work experience placement, all the staff were friendly and I loved working outdoors. They also helped me find out about Rodbaston College and gave me the belief that I could get onto a course there. Mrs Gentles and all the staff at Rawlett helped me a lot with my exams and I am really happy with what I have achieved. I have been at Rodbaston for a few months now and I am really enjoying it. I do a work placement one day a week with Peter Smith Landscaping and I know this is something I really want to do as a career. I am looking forward to the future. I might even have my own business one day”
