You could make a difference
to the life of a young person and to yourself!
A mentor is an adult who is willing to give support and encouragement to
an individual pupil for about an hour every two weeks during term time at
mutually convenient times.
A
mentor is not:
A
teacher A substitute parent A social worker A careers officer
A
mentor is there to:
Listen
to the pupil and discuss relevant issues Discuss possible
solutions to difficulties Encourage and support
the pupil Be an objective outsider Establish a relationship
with the pupil as a friend and role model Help to build the
pupil's self confidence and ambition
Mentoring can benefit your company:
Personal
and professional development of employees at no cost except time Promoting industry/education
links Increasing awareness of
your company in the community Learn more about changes
in education Motivation and personal
satisfaction of individual staff
Anyone can be a mentor if they are:
Interested
Positive

Reliable
A good listener
Realistic
Experience has shown that mentors have an impact because they are different
from teachers and parents and it can be very rewarding for all concerned.
